GQR Update Archive (2011-2014)
This archive page was created to clean up the update page that was starting to get quite long. I figured I'd move the less relevant stuff (two seasons old) here. To those of you actually reading these, it is interesting to see where I've come from over the years in the development of my business and collection. These updates were mostly created for me to look back upon to remind myself of my passion/excitement and my evolution over the years.

Been a crazy year. We had a great season, though less overwhelming than I expected as far as numbers went... But we had some great luck with the quality of our geckos hatching out. There were only a couple of gargoyles that didn't hatch out with color, and a few cresteds that weren't overly exciting. The rest, were hot. I've been adding geckos to the available list in batches with announcements on our Facebook page (now at 1752). Our next batch will be added right after the Vegas show beginning of November. I'm not sure how long our shipping weather will be open, but once that closes, I may take pricing down for the winter and update all the information in the spring. I ended up never pairing our leachies, but we now have a new set up for them next season. I failed as a henkeli breeder as for some reason I thought they laid their eggs on top of the substrate... But found out recently that they do in fact bury them... Doh! Better luck next season. As for holdbacks, I'm severely limiting myself on them this round, so there is (and will be) some amazing top notch geckos available (including some male gargs!). Still waiting on the slow to cook chewie eggs to hatch, but looks like we'll have maybe 5 2014 chewie babies. I'd like to hold onto them for a year to see color development prior to releasing them for sale. Two from 2013 are all that remain available. We'll have two chewie pairs next year, and possibly a third depending on if I can find the right male. Next season we'll finally have our first hatchling x hatchling GQR gargoyle pairings (at last)! It was my luck to not have any male holdbacks until 2013. 2016 will be insane... but don't want to get too far a head of myself. :)

A little lax on the updates lately... So I'll summarize. This year I have a total of 22 gargoyle females planned to breed, 13 crested females, 1 chewie female, 1 leachie female and 1 U. henkeli female. I had most of our geckos paired on February 14th, and most of the remaining geckos by March 20th. I have another three gargoyle females waiting to get up to weight (so close!), all cresteds and chewies are now together, pairing my U. henkeli the beginning of June and waiting on a caging upgrade to pair leachies. I have a first clutch from most of my paired females now, some with their second clutch cooking. Had another slow start to the season, but things are moving along nicely now. I'm expecting to get our first 2014 babies in June with our first 2014 availability to be around July. I'm expecting a good number of babies, so the bulk of availability will likely be around September/October, just in time for the fall shows. Depending on those numbers, we may be attending the fall Vegas show, the fall Boise show, and potentially other close-ish out of state shows. I am hoping on attending the October Tinley Park show, but likely just as an attendee (maybe), though I'm sure I could distribute geckos there for those interested.
I'm a little bad on promoting the FB page (currently at 1629), but am trying to do a bit better to keep in touch with my friends and followers. I am ALWAYS available by PM and email though, so feel free to shoot me a message. We are approaching some serious numbers, so I am planning a couple of contests. One will be a share/like for sure, and still working on the others. I'm starting to think about small monthly give-aways and producing some stickers and shirts. Just need to find the time.

The shipping season is closed for the year (unless some freak heat wave hits, and temps raise up a tad), so there may be no shipping until spring. I've not been posting much new availability, and have been tempted to hold everyone back until spring anyways. Local sales are always open, so if you don't see what you need, shoot me a message and we'll see what I have available. The 2013 season has produced some fantastic geckos. It was difficult to limit holdbacks (and I've not been very good...). It has really winded down with only 10-14 clutches remaining in the incubator. My females are ending their laying, but still getting a few stragglers. All geckos have been separated for about 8 weeks, and every has been entered into their cooling cycle to prepare them for 2014. Next year's pairings have not yet been fully scheduled, but it's getting close and is looking like a very full and exciting season. Some of our first holdbacks will finally be breeding. Predicting a lot of amazing hatchlings, and will be really limiting my holdbacks (I think).
It's been a while since I've done any sort of promotions, so I'm thinking that we will have a sort of sweepstakes contest in December to celebrate our approach and very probable breach of 1500 likes (currently 1483!). Just in time for the Holidays! More information will follow as we approach December.

Been pretty busy here with a new 50 hr/week job, so have been much less active online as far as postings go (but despite that, FB is currently at 1454!). Our late season has hit its peak, and will be starting to wind down over the next couple months, so we will be pulling all pairings shortly. I have my 2014 pairings list mostly made up, but will not be announcing them until probably October/November. I am hoping that because we are pulling gecko pairings a little earlier this year, we may be able to get an earlier start next season. Ideally, I'd like the peak hatching season to be in July next year.
We have a couple of incoming gargoyles to add to my 2014 crew that I'm very excited about. I believe that 2014 will be a crazy year as we will have a LOT of geckos breeding (around 21-ish gargoyle females, and 14-ish crested females). That actually sounds a little overwhelming now that I've gotten it written out... Our chewies have had great success this year, with Jola producing a beautiful clutch every two months. We have three babies, and another two clutches incubating. We will be offering a couple chewie babies at the upcoming WRE. The leachies haven't done so well... But I hope that with a cooling and separation session, they'll be more productive next year. I also have another species that MAY be breeding next season.... Uroplatus henkeli (Giant Leaf Tailed Geckos)!! These guys aren't official yet (hopefully will get the pair in October/November), but it is in the works, and I'm very excited to have the opportunity to keep some of these.
Still waiting on funds for the rack switch over... Accidentally made a few gecko purchases (heh), but still plan on having them all switched over this winter. Another project that is kindof-sortof in the works is building some custom breeding vivariums for some of my geckos. We have one more reptile show (the WRE) this year, and doubt that we will be doing out of state shows in the future unless we have the stock to justify the travel costs. And, as always, I am open to questions, suggestions and comments.

The first round of hatching has finished, and we've hatched out some beauties. A couple of my first year girls have proven themselves out. All planned 2013 gargoyle pairings are now together, and I hope that we have some success with some of the new breeders. Three gargoyle babies hatched out this morning, and I expect the next round of hatchings to be within 2-3 weeks. We now have two chewie babies, and another clutch due to hatch in the next two weeks (and a third clutch that is about a month into cooking). Still nothing (good) from the leachies, but I'm not too concerned yet as it is their first try. I finally caught a clutch... only to find it infertile. (Doh!) We have some really nice cresteds that have hatched out, and quite a few more exciting clutches cooking. Talos may be paired with a couple of females I've been growing up this season depending on the girls... although it is starting to get a little late into the season for pairing. I may wait until 2014. This is turning out to be a great season, despite the slow start.
I'm starting to think about timing for pair separation, and am thinking September. I hope to have switched over to breeding racks by that time to allow each female to acclimate to her own breeding tub in time for the 2014 season which I may start a little early depending. It's a costly switch, but I think it will pay off to have each female her own space. That would at least reduce the stress-induced weight drops from being moved around, and will make my life easier as far as cleaning and efficiency goes.
The Facebook page is now at 1378 (you guys are awesome!), and I really need to start planning the next contest/giveaway. It's getting difficult to keep up with demand (especially as far as gargoyles go). Keep an eye on the Facebook page for updates on availability. I will be posting a few of my proven female breeders sometime in the fall as well. Gotta make room for all the 2011's that are going to breeding next season...

I doubt anyone really reads these... But ah well, it's sort of a nice way for me to track things overall in my own way. We had a very successful event at the SLC Repticon a couple weekends ago. I was asked to give a presentation on geckos, and although the first day wasn't that great (give me some slack, it was my first public presentation ever!), the second day was much better. There's much room for improvement, but that's how it is in the gecko world. We all strive to learn constantly to better ourselves, our animals and our hobby. We were planning on the Boise Repticon show in a couple weeks, but due to some circumstances were unable to get in the health certificates for the animals in time. So we have changed plans/venues and are now attending the Las Vegas show May 11th and 12th. It'll be our first out of state show, but I think it will be a lot of fun. I'd been planning on vending at many more shows this year than we did last year, but I'm beginning to wonder if we'll have the stock for that sort of expense as we've sold a good number of geckos this spring. I'm currently saving up for some new rack systems and nice furnishings, which will speed up our feeding/misting/cleaning time.
The Facebook page is now at 1208 likes (thank you!), and I'm still thinking on when the next contest will be, and what it will be. Perhaps it will be a sweepstakes, where I will create an image with information about the contest and liking the image will be an entry, and sharing the image will be some extra entries... As usual, I'll be asking everyone for their input when we get closer (1500 likes). I've been updating the site a little at a time, so the caresheet has new information and the terms are better explained (I think). Remember that the available pages are updated instantly as far a sales/holds go... I only update the weights once a month usually (unless requested) as weighing all my geckos more often than that gets time-consuming, and sometimes frustrating.
An update on the seasons progress: Although we've had geckos paired since January, due to the cold it has still been a slow start. I now have fertile eggs from 90% of my females (including Amenti, Hathor, Torch and Jola). Both of Jola's clutches of eggs are developing nicely and now when the first clutch candled are black meaning they're closer to hatch time (the second clutch you can see the embryo's shadow). I still really have no clue on when to expect those babies as it seems chahoua incubation times are highly variable (ranging in the 90-120 days up to 250 days is what I've read). Still waiting on a good clutch from Absinthe, and actually missed another one (pulled the cage apart for a cleaning and found a clutch randomly sitting under a hollow). I'm going to get the hang of it sometime... Our first clutches of eggs are looking like they'll be hatching out within another month (can't remember exact dates off the top of my head), and the season's peak will likely be in July/August. We have a lot of nice geckos breeding this year, so stay tuned later in the season to see what we've produced. If you have a pairing that you'd like to reserve a hatchling out of, feel free to email me ([email protected]) to be put on the list for first dibs.

Well, we've reached 1,000 on Facebook recently (a lot faster than I expected) and as promised, the contest will be starting (actually later today at 12:00pm MST). As of this writing I'm seeing 1,048 fans, and that is a huge deal to me. I couldn't have this much fun, and have nearly as much success if it weren't for you. This contest will be big... Possibly my biggest (unless I can reach a ridiculous number someday... But I won't get my hopes up ;) ). First place will receive a $100 GQR credit! Second place will receive a $50 GQR credit, and third will receive a $25 GQR credit. Theme ("Shades of White") is required to win, so I'm really excited to see what everyone will create.
As far as geckos go, I have two fertile eggs from my breeding M. chahoua pair (which I'm really, really excited about), and I'm still waiting on some good eggs from my leachies. Absinthe has been digging like crazy for about a week.. and she stopped caring a couple days ago so I'm getting a little anxious. I may just die and go to heaven if I ever get little baby leachies. I added two new high color gargoyle babies to the available list today (Cellulose and Ketone). I was planning on having 11 breeding gargoyle females this season (10 are paired now), but I was surprised to find that three additional females are right at breeding weight (will wait another couple-few months to pair them though), with two more females following closely. This season is going to be insane, I can already feel it. And I'm loving it already.

It's been a long and cold winter here in Northern Utah, but we're starting to see some warmer weather predictions coming through. I have officially placed all my pairs (except for a few gargoyle females) together as of January 22nd. All seems to be going well so far and have had quite the chorus of nightly gecko peeps. I am hoping to get some eggs starting in February, and some babies starting in May. I only have three incubating eggs remaining, but we still have a large number of geckos left over from the 2012 season, which will be nice at the upcoming shows. I'm excited that we will be vending at least five shows this year. I have had one clutch of infertile eggs from Jäger and Absinthe. I didn't expect more eggs for at least a couple of months, so didn't think to have the gecko sitter check for any while I was out of the country early January... Well, when I got back and changed out all the lay box substrate with organic peat moss, I was pretty disappointed to find another clutch of now-bad eggs. (Totally not the sitter's fault... I had no idea she'd be laying again one month later). Guess we'll have to wait another couple months to find any good (hopefully) eggs from them. Perhaps I need another leachie pair... ;).
I feel good with the GQR Facebook's current following (705 as of today), but I'd love to keep it growing and interactive. It's been hard to keep posting pictures and updates there as we've been incredibly busy lately. I'm hoping to get some good pairing pictures to share as well as updated pics of available geckos. We will be holding another contest of some sort (TBD) once we hit 1,000 likes. It'll be a big marker for us and so will celebrate accordingly. I am also looking to do a couple of FB promotions for you to print out and bring to shows we'll be attending. One last thought is I loaded up my Garg Collection page on a strange computer and it took 6 minutes to load all the pictures! Well, I've created a holdback page and transferred all those geckos to it to hopefully speed that page load time. Sorry about that and thanks for all your patience!

I'd like to increase some interaction with my customers and fans on Facebook to make things more fun and interesting. So after a bit of thought and a bit of research, I started a photo contest. This opened up on October 5th, and will close on October 12th. The photo with the most votes on closing will be the winner of a $25 credit towards a GQR purchase. This is a bit of an experiment. If we get as much interaction as I'm hoping for, then there will be more of these in the future with larger rewards! After two days of the contest being open, we have 8 entries and already lots of votes. I'd say successful so far... So be sure to like our Facebook page (Gargoyle Queen Reptiles) for contests, specials, discounts, etc. There's more-a-comming!
As far as this season goes, we are pretty much done with everything. We still have a few eggs incubating, but will likely not have those babies be available until next spring when it warms up. We still have a lot of crested geckos from this and last season so if you are looking for some nice animals, I do give discounts for multiple animals purchashed. All of my male Crested and Gargoyles have been removed from their girl/s as of the beginning of August. For the 2013 season, we're nearly doubling our breeding Gargoyle females, and am cutting back on Cresteds by a couple females. Those pairings will be announced hopefully by the end of this year. Absinthe (female leachianus) is now large enough to breed and has been placed with Jäger so hope for babies in the Spring. Also, Jola (female chahoua) is large enough for breeding and actually has been for most of the year, so she is now with Baldor. Now that the gecko room is starting a cool-down, I'm hoping that'll keep hostilities to a minimum and they'll all bond nicely (going good so far!). Kara (female chahoua) and Loki will be together in the spring (hopefully), so we should also have chahoua babies next year. I'm super excited for 2013.

I've updated my availability pages and added a number of geckos. We've hit the peak of our season and hatchings are now in decline. I will be pulling apart my breeding groups a bit early this year to prepare them for an earlier start for the 2013 season. We ended up having too many virgin females that didn't know what they were doing... So we didn't have the output that was expected this year. That's all fine, and the good news is that those females should have it down for next season. In comparison to the 2011 season, it was interesting to see which females were productive in one and not the other. We had a few geckos who have been consistent, but a few that were complete opposites. I love comparisons, data and graphs... So I'll be happy to put my information into my personal research on my growing gecko empire.
We have one more show this year end of September in Salt Lake City, UT (check out the upcoming shows tab for more information). Then we'll be starting the cooldown. Expect 2013 breeders to be placed together at the very first of the year and hatchings to start (hopefully) about end of March/beginning of April. I have a number of new animals breeding that will also be virgins, so hopefully we have some more luck with getting them to start their seasons. As for upcoming animal availability... We have about 15 Gargoyles that will be for sale, and around 50 Crested geckos. Again, I'm trying to cut back those Cresteds and increase Gargoyles so we expect to see more of that shift next season. It's super tentative, but we've been talking a little about doing October's Tinley Park 2013! That would be huge... and I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much... But we'll make it there eventually. Just all depends. :)

I'm constantly taking pictures of my animals, but because I like to put GQR on them it takes me forever to get them posted! If you have a gecko in mind, please feel free to email me for updated pictures if not up already and I'll get them to you ASAP. With such lovely weather, most of the pictures as of late have been outdoors in my garden among the flowers. I'm pretty excited about this new batch of photos that I'll be putting up hopefully within the next couple of weeks. It's interesting to see the progression of my photos, not only as the geckos age and grow, but as my camera upgrades and my photography skills get better. I just love taking pictures of all my beautiful geckos!
On another note, I'm looking at my egg list (because I like to keep track of EVERYTHING) and will be having a lot more geckos in the next few weeks. All my babies are kept for 4-6 weeks before they're analyzed for availability status, but keep in mind that there will be a lot more gargs (especially) to pick from late June/July. It's frustrating to look at my garg availability page and only have two animals for sale... But I promise, that will change soon (I have about 4-6 that will be put up in about 2 weeks)!

It's been a while since I've written an update, but there's been a lot happening around GQR. First, I'd like to announce that baby season is here! We've already had a few gargoyles hatch out and some cresties, but things are going to get pretty crazy hatch-wise in the next few weeks. Second, Repticon SLC (more info here) is THIS WEEKEND!!! Gather up your friends and family and come check out some awesome reptiles!
I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the awesome results of my 2011 season (gargoyles first). Most of my babies had lots of color, it was so hard to choose hold backs. I think this year is only going to be harder. We've expanded our breeding from three females (full season) and two virgin females with one successful hatching each to eight full time females with another three or four lined up for later in the season (weight depending). What an explosion! Expect to see lots and lots of colorful and gorgeous babies this year. Now for cresteds, we've actually decreased our stock, but have more females breeding overall. We've gone from three successful females (and two with 2-4 babies produced) to six full season females and one that will be paired later in the year. Wow! This is really exciting...

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the awesome results of my 2011 season (gargoyles first). Most of my babies had lots of color, it was so hard to choose hold backs. I think this year is only going to be harder. Finally, the new updated website is DONE! I put a lot of work into making the site much better, so I hope that I accomplished my goal. Some new features: I've added an 'Upcoming Shows' page, Caresheet, Artwork page with pieces available for purchase either online or at shows, and the big one... My gecko diet page. I am now officially a Repashy online/expo dealer so you can now order your food from me. I have made the available pages much more readable and added more pictures for each gecko. I will continue adding more pictures as they grow while leaving the older ones up so you can see their progression. I'm sure there will still be changes as I try to figure out the site, so if you have suggestions or something doesn't read well, feel free to contact me.
In other news...We have most of our eggs from the 2011 season hatched out with only a few left incubating (around 6). We started putting some pairings together, so start watching for babies around April/May. I'm still waiting for a shipping window to get my newest addition, a red/orange striped male gargoyle that will be breeding with my girls Amenti and Nekhabet.

_I have an urgent plea to anyone who has not already taken action against the constrictor ban. (Gosh, I hope this link works!)

On another note, I had one garg partially hatched out last night that after placing in my palm and tickling it's chin, it emerged from its egg in my hand! That was pretty cool... Then I was showing a friend another egg that was small, but ready to pop... And it did! Right in my fingers. The little one started slashing away at the eggshell to make a break for freedom. We were able to film a good 10 minutes of it attempting to break free. It unfortunately never finished and was later cut out of the egg to reveal a beautiful, but dead striped baby from Geb x Hathor. So disappointing. :(

_ Ya know, it's been pretty crazy here the last few weeks with finals
week now starting tomorrow. Getting closer to the 2012 breeding season
and I decided to sex a few of my unsexed future breeders and ended up
with two new males that are going to be amazing breeders (Thoth and
Osiris)! Too bad that bunch won't be ready until 2013. Turns out that
one of the female chewies that came in was supposed to be 20 grams
heavier than she really was, so looks like she won't be breeding next
year. It is looking like I will have one pair breeding though (Baldor x
Jola)! Can't wait to give that a go.
I now have a high quality ultra humidifier with heating ability in the gecko room which has already helped with food dishes drying out quickly. I've noticed considerable growth drops in hatchlings due to the colder temperatures, so because all the males are separated from their females, I think I'll crank the heat back up to normal and see if that helps. Shipping temperatures have officially dropped below freezing nightly, so there won't be any geckos going out in the mail. I'm still willing to drive to meet people for pickups. I had a new baby hatch out today and am expecting three other eggs to pop soon, but that still leaves over a dozen eggs in the incubator.
Now for some babies!!

I've just updated a few things that will hopefully make it easier to navigate and view my animals. I'm in the process of working on a new available page that will take away the 'add to cart' and allow me to post multiple representational pictures of each animal. It's hard to catch every animal in their fired up and fired down states, so that will take some time, but it is coming! I'm starting to put a link over the available animals parents that will take you directly to a photo of the two. I've also reduced the prices on some of my animals (some pretty significantly) as I'm wanting to move a few more before my shipping window closes completely for the winter.
There are some new animals coming next week that I'm very excited about... Two gorgeous high red female R. chahaoua and one more stunning female R. auriculatus with red and orange stripes that will be breeding next year! The female chewies might be breedable next year, but I will have to wait a couple months to decide for sure. My crested breeding groups are decided for 2012, but the gargoyles are still undecided. I'm having some issues with probable males being females with pores and probable females turning male late, so groups probably won't be set in stone until the 2012 breeding season starts.
There are still eggs in my incubator that are really starting to hatch out... Four cresteds overnight with another clutch starting to hatch. Be watching for updates... Which reminds me... I will be making a 'gecko nursery' page instead of posting them directly on the available page with a 'not old enough to ship' disclosure... I think that will clear up some confusion.
I think that's about all for now..... Thanks for readin'!
